Default Campbell County Coyote Contest

TEAM FOXPRO members Scott Shreve and Jim Baumgartner competed in the 2009 Campbell County Contest in Gillette, Wyoming this past weekend and finished the two day contest tied for 7th place. Below is the story about the contest and how it went for TEAM members in Wyoming. No doubt the weather impacted the results of this contest!

Friday night started out slow, winds were 15 to 20 mph with the moon very bright. Saturday morning turned out better though. Our first stand we had some coyotes howl back to the locator and we moved down the draw to set up closer on them. After a few seconds of with the pup distress, the pair popped out on a ridge at 380 yards and I got the first coyote of the hunt, a big male that weighed 33.8 lbs. The wind was still blowing 17 to 20 miles an hour with air temperatures in the low teens. Jim and I decided to get into the rough draws and call. We called a couple more stands without luck and then mid morning got another answer. This pair howled back at the locator and Jim found them under a cedar bush at 1368 yards. We laid on the pup distress and here they came. 20 minutes of calling went by and the male showed up at 265 yards and we coaxed him in to 164 yards where Jim shot him. Another big adult male that weighed 34.1 lbs. Saturday night again was tough as heck. We got our last coyote called in with the Lightning Jack at 7:30PM. She showed up after a few series of calls and I took her at 280 yards when she sat down on a little rise. The snowing and blowing shut us down fast, you couldn't see 40 to 50 yards with the spotlights for the rest of the night. The same conditions for most of Sunday. It was -19 with the wind chill and every critter was dug in tight to their beds. That finished out our first contest of the year. Hopefully the weather will be better for the next one !
