You are right about it possibly being the ammo in part too.
Hornady has admittedly had some issues with the 17 hornet V-Max.
Mainly the primers not fitting in the pockets properly and leaking gases by(obviously slowing velocity at the same time).
Also some blowing out the primer all together. in some instances knocking the ejector & plunger assembly free of the bolt all together.
All of which I experienced with my rifle early on.

When mine came back from Savage I only had a few of the original rounds I purchased left. They did not malfunction in any way.

I got 150 more rounds of the new stuff with the primers "staked".
This ammo is functioning fine so far but I notice that it is about 50 fps slower than the original batch (I have a chrony 3600 fps old vs 3535 fps new on average).
I do not thing the new stuff being a tad slower is a coincidence either.
Makes sense to stake the primer an lower pressures just a tad "until we figure this thing out".

I also had some of the odd sounding shots you describe early on too.

I think both Savage and Hornady have had issues with the 17 Hornet.
And, when you get a person who gets an iffy rifle and then is unlucky enough to get the iffy ammo.............. this is where you XNO , I, and some others come in.

It stinks but I admire your willingness to keep with it for now.

Thanks JTank70. Even though I am still frustrated with the performance at the range. Something tells me the rifle may smooth out. Only a few rounds were fired on the Ghog hunt yesterday evening and not a single hiccup. The bolt felt good.

The weird sounding reports were from LOT # 3120812. Go figure I have four boxes of that LOT left. I have two other LOT numbers as well.

One thing I forgot to mention is that even though there were still incidents of the FTF/FTE and the bolt locking....the brass did not have any markings or bent necks like they did before.

We'll see. Hopefully it will smooth out and let me build some confidence in it for fox season.

Stop it.......just because I mention this rifle to you every time we converse with one another, and I dream about it asleep and awake, and I have a print out of it on my desk, and I have the page of the advertisement for it in Predator Xtreme magazine identified by book mark so I can find it quickly......all of this does not mean I am going to run out and buy it....

But....it would be cool wouldn't it!....(wife's new camera/appliances....hmmm).
