Just responding to your question about the 257 weatherby. In my opinion Any weatherby cartridge tends to be hard on the throat of the barrel bc of increased muzzle velocity.

the 338 lapua does not meet my criteria. CHuck hawks recoil table the recoil energy is what you feel, the lapua is about 37 the 7mag at 20


at this point it will probably be something in the 6.5, the 280, or .308/30-06

but then so is the 260. Oh, and the boring ol 06 meets a lot of what you are looking for.

well, i might be wrong on saying the 338 doesn't fit what I want

so far brother-in-law has pretty much said "how about a .280AI, then we can take the 7mag and turn it into something like a .338 mag"

100% not sure what I owuld need a 338 for, but if he can put on a good muzzle break & some other adjustments it might happen yet

The 338 Lapua Magnum was developed in 1983 by Research Armament Co. It was based on a 416 Rigby case necked down to .338 caliber. Later Lapua and Norma have put this cartridge into production. The caliber was designed to arrive at 1000 meters with enough energy to penetrate 5 layers of military body armor and still make the kill. The effective range of this caliber is about 1 mile (1600meters) and in the right shooting conditions, it could come very close to the 2000 meter mark, provided you have the right rifle/ammo/optics/shooter/spotter combination. This caliber is designed primarily as a military extreme range anti-personnel round. There really are no Law Enforcement applications, unless you need a super penetrating round for either armored vehicles, or for barricaded suspects. There are not a lot of rifles chambered for the .338, but the list is growing with the likes of Sako, AI, and others producing .338 sniping rifles.

I checked out a 338 lapua yesterday at a local gunshop. I was surprised to see that it was made by savage. Looked like a nice rifle, I just can't justify it's cost/use. LOL

i don't think i'd have the guts/shoulder to pony up behind a lapua,

but reading around a bit a 338win mag with a muzzle break and recoil pad can bring i down to feeling a bit closer to a 7mag.

and honestly I can't think of a single thing I would need it for but for the 3-500bucks it might cost me it's hard to turn away from having 2 guns in my safe worked on by my wife's brother
