Fur friendly bullets in 223 1:7 or 1:8 twist?

Long time lurker, first time poster. Looking to get a bolt action specialty pistol in 223, 15 inch barrel with brake, using a rifle scope. One of the regular contributors on Specialty Pistols forum suggested a 1:7 or 1:8 twist so I can eventually shoot longer distance if I wish. He lives in the wide open West, but I live in a very forested region in the northcentral U.S.

I will be moving out of town soon, and hope to find a place where I can shoot a lot, but again, not sure if I will find anywhere with a space over 300 yards. I would also like to start coyote hunting, with the idea of finding a fur friendly bullet.

Can I do that effectively if I have a 1:7 or 1:8 twist? I know those twists will stabilize heavier bullets, but may limit me on the lower end (50-55 grains), which is the commonly recommended bullet weight range to be fur friendly.

Just curious if I should go with a more common 1:9 twist for this cartridge.

I have not had an issue shooting 55 grainers out of any of my faster twist barrels. It may require some load development, but you shouldn’t have an issue finding a fur friendly bullet that shoots.

I know this is an old post, but I will comment. I have two 1:8 twist 223 rifles, one is a Ruger 16.1" and the other a 20" Tikka

Both rifles shoot well with lighter bullets, 40gr, 50gr, 55gr. Vmax, Varmageddon, Ballistic tips, Hornady soft points.

No worries with the quicker twist giving issues with the lighter bullets. Years ago, a friend had a 9 twist 223 m700 that would blow up 50gr Hornady SP SX mid air. They're a very thin jacketed bullet designed for 12 twist or 14 twist 223/222 varmint use

I use nothing but Sierra 52 gr bthp match bullets loaded with TAC out of my 18” AR chambered in 223 Wylde and get roughly 3,000 fps with the load that I found it likes. I get 1/2 MOA at 100 yards with that load and for an AR, I don’t know that it gets much better than that. I’ve only had one runner out of the 10+ coyotes I’ve shot with it and that was because I got excited and shot him a little far back. Good luck out there!
