Finally got my first red fox! All that's left is a bobcat and I'll have completed my own little personal "Predator Slam".
Went to a property that my friend's dad deer hunts, where no one was ever allowed to kill "the property owner's fox". Well there are supposedly so many of them that it is now a problem. Buddy's dad bow hunted there a couple weeks ago and 3 reds came up to his blind and then were barking at him and wouldn't leave, even following him when he got on his atv and rode back to the house. So the property owner put a hit out on them...and who better to go in there than myself! We got set up just after sunset in the field next to the house and sat in front of a clump of trees and brush, facing the hillside of hardwoods we expected them to come from. We were posted about 80 yards from the edge. We got settled and sat quiet for 20 minutes to let it get completely dark but the moon was pretty bright. I decided to start with some barely audible vole squeaks for 3 minutes incase they were in the immediate area but nothing showed up. Started the Magical Sequence on my foxcast and bay bee cottontail filled the air on low. after 2 minutes, it turned the volume up a little and u could hear it slightly echo up the hill. within 10 seconds we hear something running full tilt down the hill right in front of us from the top. aimed the spotlight and waited....out pops a red on the edge. He locks on the foxjack and runs right at the call. He got about 20 yards from the call and my buddy smooched him and he pumps the breaks. I dropped him right there with the 22 mag, 40 yard shot. |

I was using the 40 grain CCI Maxi-Mag JHP's. No, I never use the light on it. The moon was almost full though so it was a bright night anyway.
