Platinum Gray Makes Him Pay
Starting my season off with an October 1 start day for the 2015/16 greeted me with high winds. What a bummer ! So i set my alarm for 1:30 am. It was a pleasant surprise to awake to the silence, my wind chimes were quiet. I set about collecting my snacks and equipment. I really didn't think i would be hunting at all. It was 4 am when i finally started my first set. Wind was still out of the Northeast. I had hiked to the back of this farm tight to the woods. I was sure they would answer me from the Northeast. Wrong ! Five minutes after some howls the whole pack answered. Directly to my East and pretty close. Oh crap, my first set and i'm set up wrong. To late to move now so lets play. I give them some jack rabbit. Then some vole squeaks. Then more of the same. The wind shifted out of the Southeast. There he is peaking over the edge of the drainage ditch 150-200 yards NOW DOWNWIND. Great ! He is now barking like hell and not showing himself. He's right there just can't see him. Oh shut up ! They all know i'm here for sure. I give more rabbit and vole squeaks. Nothing........I start barking back at him and again and again. Well the gig is up. I blew it my first night. Pick up my coat and call bag, drop my shooting sticks and the bang against my stool. There he is to my North looking at me again. Game is still on, lets go.....up and down with rabbit and squeaks. The wind has stopped momentarily. I catch a glimpse of him circling back to where he had winded me to my Northwest. Maybe 300 yards out. He won't look at me. Three times i've seen him him now. What to do,what to do. Crank the volume to high and let it rip. Platinum Gray ! Oh get ready here he comes at full speed. He's crossing about 400 yards like a race horse ! Locked in on the Fusion. As he's bearing down on it i'm howling over and over and over. He checks up and i adjust the new coyotelight to light him up like a movie star on stage and the 204 sends it. He runs and stops....i send two more. I can't find him. I look and look.... There he is 175 paces from where i sat. Two of the three 40gr. V-max found their target. First night out coyote down ! ![]() |
