Oh, I gotta add this:

My Native American buddy used a 220 Swift for everything including bear and elk. He's an expert hunter first and an expert marksman second.

I agree with your friends 100%, but others I've talked to think a 243 is to small for Southern Whitetail Deer. Heck, they aren't much bigger than my dog.
Hunting skills, patience, and shot placement are the requirments. Obviously your friends are well aware of them as I know you are Weasel.
Unfortunately the teaching now is to blow through both shoulders, slap each other on the back, a couple of high fives, and call it a good hunt.
