Just curious what everyone prefers for coyote loads. I’ve been using 3 inch nitro turkey #4s and Winchester varmint x BB. But haven’t got a coyote close enough to test them out.

I prefer the Varmint x for two reasons.
These shells pattern very well for me, and they are a bit larger than turkey loads.. I have tried Dead Coyote loads, but got poor patterns in each of my guns. A nice pattern @ 40 yards is very important. Hope this helps.

I got good patterns from both out to 50 with a long beard choke .650, but should I use a more open choke for the bigger shot?

Not necessarily.
As long as the Varmint-X BBs are not flattening out and you got the pattern size you want, then you are good to go. If you see small "slits" in the paper target, instead of small holes, then your Choke size may be a bit too tight. I use a .650 Choke as well, and get a nice pattern without any flattening of the Varmint-X. Other shotguns I use require a slightly more open (.665 and ,670) chokes to prevent flattening of the pellets.

Carlson’s coyote choke with handloaded 1 3/8oz lead bb or the Varmint X loads. Both perform pretty well out to 40 yards for me.

I reload.
I also shoot coyotes at 80 yards+ with great results. I can't afford to use tungsten or heavy shot either. I load lead F shot or lead TT shot 22 caliber, 21 caliber. A 3" Rio hull and a bunch of "Steel" powder. 47 pellets or 49 pellets ( 1.5 oz) over 1500 fps and a .669 extended ported choke tube. I use a red dot on my 870 super express or M3500 Stoeger 30" barrel, pistol grip stock on both. They both pattern with an average of 10 hits on a 10" paper plate at 75 yards. I have multiple pass-through shot even at 80 yards. BE warned there is a LOT of recoil too.
