Dead cow, call or no call ?

went to a place at 3.30 pm. for the first time & was going to try calling in some yotes in a confined area from the guy's tree stand. took my 12 gauge with OO Buck. When i got there, there was already a coyote near the stand ! It was about 50 to 75 yards away & didn't spot me. Then another smaller one behind it. Not sure if i should wait, turn the caller on, or shoot. they started to walk away broadside so i took the shot on the smaller one. Knocked it down then it got up & ran off. Couldn't find blood or yote but did find where they were going. A dead cow about 125 yards away in a ditch with just a little eating done to it. SO, I'm sure others will be there for the feast soon. since they now have a 1000 pound food source , can i call them to me ??? If so, which call's. Or should i try to work with the wind & try to pick them off at the food source which will be more difficult due to the lay of the land / tree's / fence, ect. please advise ?

I'd ditch the shottie and bring a rifle......that was a long poke for a 12ga spitting 00 buck....jus say'n

Fla_dogman 01-08-2019 06:56 PM

I'd call sporadically with coyote vocals. Not too long and change it up , use pup distress too.

Had I been in the tree stand where I wanted to be the longest shot would have been 50 yards that's why I took the shotgun.

I would still bring a capable rifle......turkeys at 50yds are one thing with a shotgun.....yotes are another....just my opinion.

Makes sense on the coyote vocals since they're going to have all the food they need, i doubt they would come to a distressed rabbit, thanks for the input.

Night Eyes 01-09-2019 09:12 AM

I agree with coyote vocals parodically, maybe coyote fight scenario. I would also test the range and pattern on that shotgun. I think the farther you stay away from that carcass the better. Maybe try to find their travel pattern and set up an ambush point. Once you start blasting them close to the carcass they will associate danger with it. Try to give them a few days or better to calm down.

Fla_dogman 01-09-2019 09:17 AM

If you have it you might try a coyote fight call, let us know how and what works

I have called many coyotes off of carcasses with rabbit distress. I have called many coyotes off of fresh kills - arriving at the call with faces soaked and dripping blood.

Hunger is way, way, WAY over rated as any kind of motivation for coyotes responding to a distress call. It's excitement, the thrill of killing, that triggers them. The LOVE TO KILL. They come running to rabbit with the same look on their face my dogs do when I ask them if they want to go for a walk or play catch.

Coyotes routinely kill without eating. I have seen it many, many times. Coyotes in my part of the country rarely have any problem getting all they need to eat. I'd expect it is even easier for coyotes back east.

Hunger no doubt plays a role some of the time. But I think it's a very minor role, all things considered. I hear people talk about it like hunger is "the thing". Personally, I don't think it is.

Good advice has been given. One thing I might suggest is the use of Heavy Coyote loads or #4 buck. Ditch the 00 buck. Too few pellets and you probably only hit that coyote with 1-2 pellets at most.

Yup but at 70yds with a shottie even with the specialized loads I'd only try it with a perfectly matched choke for that distance, maybe an optic as well...still rather have a rifle in that situation though....; )

Thanks for all the advice fellas, I'll keep you posted on how I make out.

Yeah, I'd never try a shot at 70 yards with the shotgun. If a coyote is 45 yards or so away, it is safe unless I have a rifle. (even at that, it may still be safe :) )

Night Eyes 01-11-2019 11:45 AM

I know people have shot yotes 70yds plus, with special chokes and good loads. However, I think if your going to push pellets past 50yds, maybe you should not only test pattern, but also test penetration. It only takes one pellet to kill, but is it consistent in every shot. I would take my 22 first.

Dead cow update.

UPDATE !! Strong north west winds today & perfect for the deer stand setup near the dead cow. got there at 3.00 & used the coyote vocals sparingly then 15 minutes of silence. went with a coyote /fox fight & one committed. popped him & he was down but struggling, left him & went to pup distress 3 & another came out right past the downed one. pow ! she took off !! waited about 15 minutes to see if any more would come. I found the second one about 50 yards away. the first one dragged itself off & i couldn't find it but he's toast. and yes as you can see i brought a rifle to the fight this time !!! well i cant get the photo attached , it says the file size is to large. Dang it !

if someone want to help me with posting the pic i can e-mail it or text it.

Night Eyes 01-12-2019 10:43 PM

Congrats, awesome job. I to have to learn to use photo. Have the same problem.

Guys! go to Imgur.com website and establish an account. Upload your pictures to their site, then select the picture you want to post(it will enlarge), select large thumbnail size(down near the bottom on the right), then select Forums and messages boards , hit the copy button out to the side of that selection. Then go to the remarks section of FoxPro, right click and paste, it will be there after you comment and submit.

Yup IMGUR is great!

How come you didn't finish the first yote off with a second shot?.....just curious.

They are not always toast....; )

The first yote was about 25 yds. from me & hit with the 223 & was down & paralyzed on the back half. I didn't think it could go far and i wanted to be quiet & see if there were more, kinda use him as a decoy with that fight call, which there was. so i got two rather than one. trust me, the one i couldn't find is dead ! I'll work on the pic's later today. thank's.

DAA 01-13-2019 09:55 AM

Especially using a .223, I don't stop shooting until they stop twitching. Shotgun too. Seen way too many coyotes not stay dead with both.

I personally would never let a wounded coyote be my decoy, either, I end their suffering as fast as I can.

i cant get those pics to transfer from imgur. Didn't mean to make waves on not finishing off yote number one. I also have pics of tripples i got during deer season within roughly 2 minutes. I was in a deer stand ( HUNTING DEER ) when a group of 3 crossed a pasture towards me. I shot the first one with my 6mm at about 100 yds. The other two stuck around the area to see what happened to her. 2 more shot's. 2 more yotes. You may not approve of my tactics but i've got doubles & tripples & i'm fairly new to the coyote game !

Sonny Pruitt 01-13-2019 11:46 AM

So, the way it sounds you do have them on the Imgur website in a gallery under your name?

I will help you get them posted if you do.

Click on my name here on FoxPro Forums, then select "Send a Private Message to Sonny Pruitt" then send me your phone number, I will call you and walk through it on their website.

Anytime, most everyone on here is quick to help you with anything. You proved you're not to thin skinned already. You can handle us at our worst.

Welcome to FoxPro. It was really good talking with you. Saved your number, if I ever get back home, I will look you up for whatever is in season.

No thin skin on this end, I'm just glad to be putting a dent in the local yote population any way necessary !

Agreed.

CAMO did you snap that AR together yourself? If so what barrel are you running?

This one is a colt LE6920 / M4 that i purchased complete minus the Acog. It's got a 16" with a 1/7 twist. I have a bunch of colt's in different configurations. Most are roll marked, Restricted, Military / Law enforcement use only. LEO. guns. 3 came from a California tactical unit with short heavy barrels / pinned flash hiders & 1/12 twist. All are either 1/7 or 1/12 twist. no 1/9 I like the LEO rollmarked guns, They tend to be a little rarer & hold their value better than your basic stamped AR.

All do well with 55 gr. fmj. I know that's not a preferred round for yotes but i buy my ammo by the thousand's & only a few go towards critters.
