View Full Version : Miserably Hot Weather Crows

My brother made the trip down from Colorado for the second year in a row to shoot some crows and play a little golf. I warned him that it's been miserably hot but he made the trip anyway. We decided to hunt from daylight until mid-morning then get back in the air-conditioning until late afternoon and play golf if we felt so inclined.
We did not use any decoys just run & gun and the first morning we made 7 stands. 1st stand we got 8 then 5 then 3 then 0 then 10 then 2 then 2 for a total of 30.
Next morning we started off with 5 then 1 then 0 then 2 then rallied with 7 then called it quits with the 15 total as it was 82 degrees at daylight so by 10am it was HOT. Interestingly we called coyotes on two different stands as they came in just hearing crows and some crow distress sounds.

My brother from first day after shooting a triple.

Me on day two.

Still hot here with no relief in sight but while I was over in East Texas behind the Pine Curtain I decided to call Sean(Yellowhammer). Just wanted to see if he and his son Hunter would be brave enough to get out in the heat to shoot some crows since I was in the neighborhood.
Well they foolishly accepted my offer so yesterday evening we made a few stands and 7 crows paid the price. Hunter is much smarter than his dad and when it was decided to get up early this morning and try again he stayed in the A/C. Sean and I made 4 stands and got 7 again. On the way back to Waco I stopped on a 300acre piece of property mainly to call crows but also to scout for predator sign and pick some calling locations. I heard some crows in the distance so I set-up near a tank(pond for the easterners)and cut loose with the Foxpro. Well the action was fast for about 10 minutes and after 10 shots 9 crows were down. One early kill hung in the treetop which helped fire them up. Fun HUNT!

I found some shotgun shells at cabelas that Winchester makes for shooting whitewings that looked like just the ticket for shooting crows. The box does not give dram but just states 1250fps but with 1 1/4 oz. No.7(no not 7 1/2) shot they sure work well.
I have made a few run and gun stands since I got them and killed 44 crows in 63 shells shot for me that is pretty good.
The last stand I made only 8 crows came and I shot 9 times.... there were no survivors.
