For shotgun shells for crows? Also what at what distance do you consider a crow to be out of range? I have been using low brass 7 1/2 and although I have killed 16 crows in 3 stands I think it could be better.

Hammrit,

All I use is a 3 dram trap load in 7 1/2's or 8's. A distance that is out of range for an average shooter is not out of range for a well seasoned shooter. Most average shooters skill level starts to fall off once the crow is beyond 35 to 40 yards. A skilled shotgunner can kill crows graveyard dead with a trap load up to 60 to 65 yards if he is on em.

Around an 1 1/4 ounces of 7 1/2's had always been my go to crow load. I loaded some 8's for a while, but found I was wounding more birds.

As far as range, I've killed a few at super long range, but find 40 yards or less to be the most effective and humane.

I load my own shells and I like the 1 1/2oz #5lead. Stones 'em at 65yds plus. They're on the slow side (1135fps) but with full chokes and plenty of lead(leed) time there is no escape. I used to use this load for waterfowl before the lead ban so now the crows get to try it out, lol. Plus, my Citori patterns this amazingly well.

I don't want to waste more than 5$ for ammo for crows. I get 2 1/2" shells with 71/2 shot size. I shoot with a modified choke. It works great, but you have to call them in a fairly close range, around 40 yards.
Good luck !

Dawg,

Most shooters do very well with a modified choke, it's the best of both worlds. It's open enough to connect on close shots (20 to 25 yards) and yet tight enough for (30 to 45 yards) some of your longer shots. The vast majority of crows that are shot on the wing are killed 35 yards and under.

I agree. I grew up shooting an over and under with improved and modified chokes, but watched my dad kill tons of crows with a skeet choke. I'm too cheap to carry a good over and under in the woods anymore, but generally use a modified choke in my auto.
