Default Merriams

I snuck out for a turkey hunt. It didn't last long and I had four toms within gun range. Long story, but I ended up shooting one of the smaller birds. 8 inch beard and nubs for spurs. The BIG BIRD had a LONG, THICK beard. Not sure about spurs. They kept switching places in line and I shot the 3rd bird which had been the big one, but they had switched places when crossing behind brush and tree. Oh well.......can't eat the beard or spurs. I'm still happy with what I got.

Thanks for the kind words, folks. I agree the Merriams are pretty birds. We also have Rios at lower elevation and hybrids are found pretty much anywhere in Utah. I'd rather spend my time in the beautiful mountains than the scrubby low lands. Besides, this is the same area I hunt elk and sometimes deer.

Great looking bird...congratulations on your success and like you have said before it isn't all about the kill and just being out there is a great time and to me "success" haha good job.

Nice Weasel!

I used to love hiking the hills around Lake Kent and Little Res....

But I wonder.....if turkeys were to evaluate humans, how do you think YOUR beard would score?....no need to mention a mans spurs, as that's a tad too personal....; )

Odd thing about the beard. I saw last years picture and my beard was longer than it is now. I must have beard rot????
