The climate was definitely wetter. Even just a couple hundred years ago. But even more so, going farther back.

The great mystery of the Colorado Plateau is the abrupt abandonment of the entire area around 1300 A.D. All the people just left the entire region, almost all at once. After having lived there for generation upon generation, for thousands of years. They left behind almost everything, too. The first people to find these ruins found them still full of household goods and wares. Pottery, blankets, sandals, baskets, etc.

Anyway... Lots of theories on what brought about the abandonment. But one central thread to all of them is drought. The tree rings and such show a long, sustained drought for the last 100 years or so that they occupied the area, about 1200 to 1300 A.D., roughly.

Something quite interesting, that very few realize, is that this region, the Colorado Plateau, was more densely populated with people a thousand years ago, than it is today.

That is some nice scenery. That kick off dinner sounds like a pretty nice way to start such a trip also.
