When fur prices were up on foxes a few years back, I built a 17 Ackley Hornet specifically for foxes. It ran a 20 gr bullet at 4100fps, minimal fur damage. But I could reach a Red at 300 yards, and still not ruin a Gray in close. Great fox caliber. Then Hornady developed their 17 Hornady Hornet, very similar but not as much speed as my Ackley. Not a bad choice for foxes. Just about all centerfire 22 calibers are to strong for fox. Good luck.
