Default 22 Hornet and Raccoons

Long time coon caller here. I usually bust them with the trusty 22 mag and the occasional shotgun. I got a Contender in 22 Hornet recently and have been trying it out on some day time stands. Been running hand loads with 45gr Hornady's and so far, have like the results. The hornet anchors them a little more when I have to do body shots. This first one cam crawling down the tree pretty fast responding to the bird call and decoy I had going. I almost needed a shotgun he was moving so fast, LOL.

This next pic is a funny story. I saw what I thought was one sleeping in a tree hole. I set up and start the caller. Three heads pop out like the three stooges looking at the decoy. The first comes clears the hole and I hit him broadside...fell straight down and was DRT. The other two climbed to the skinny limbs at the top of the tree. The second was hit broadside and fell down...bled out in place. The third climbed down the tree partially and stopped. Did a head shot and that was more than enough. Quite an exciting stand!!

Very cool. I was literally just showing my father in law some coon calling videos and he asked if I shoot them with a .223. I don't and explained that I use the .17wsm, and how people claim its similar to using a .22 hornet and from your account here that sounds like that maybe somewhat accurate, seems they react to your hornet like they do my WSM.

Also with seeing this and other post has me very ready to start calling some coons.

I have shot a few with a 223 when calling yotes. It can get messy with a 223....LOL.

Well thats good to know. May stick with my .17wsm. its so much lighter than an AR anyway. Keep it this season, hope to see more from you.

Pretty awesome. Thanks for sharing your hunt and pictures. I've got the Contender pistol with a 14" barrel I've wanting to try on a Raccoon hunt.

I started using the. 22 hornet for ground hogs the last couple years. 45 grn Hornady and Lil’gun have been working very well. Great little round. Congrats on the coons!
