Default Bad luck misfire?

My first night out for the season last weekend I saw eyes about 150 yards out while walking to my spot so I set up for a shot and started lip squeaking hoping to get the red to stay still long enough for a shot. I finally after several attempts got on him long enough to squeeze one off only to hear a CLICK! Dummy me put my clip in and forgot to chamber a shell. He didn't stick around long enough for another.
Nothing more that night or on the last 10 sets since. Last night I thought was going to be a productive night because I was hearing fox bark everywhere. Saw nothing until my last set. I had just gotten set up and turned adult cottontail on. 5 seconds later I saw 3 sets of yote eyes appear from behind a knoll in the field 100 yards out. They were concentrating on the call and never looked my direction but disappeared behind the knoll never to be seen again. I am guessing maybe the light spooked them but really not sure. I will be back at that spot early light in a few days.
I do think this rainy unusually warm weather here in s.c. Pa is having a negative effect.
Ill just keep on trying and have a blast doing so.

Foxer I went to some female bark howl for just a few seconds then played coyote pup screams for about 2 or 3 minutes then back to adult cottontail. No responses or eyes.
Going to same spot tomorrow morning first light. Will start with some different sounds.
