Default Wary Old Dogs - No dummies left

You've got to be in the right place, at the right time, with a call receptive coyote; then you have to be able to spot them and hope nothing goes wrong. I called this spot for my first time a few years ago and called in, and harvested a coyote here. I have called this spot a couple of times the last few years with no results. I tried this spot a few months ago and saw nothing but a few ravens and magpies.

On this particular day all was right and at the 4 1/2 minute mark he appeared in the ravine bottom, jumped up and out of it and stopped with a stare toward me on the hillside 110 yards as the caller was muted. I took a moment to decide.....do I shift my rifle to line up for the shot....start the caller again....or..? Well, I decided to go for the front on chest shot and shifted the rifle ever so slightly but these coyotes are tough to fool....Just as I was getting the cross hairs on his chest; he decided that movement wasn't cool and turned 90 degrees to make an exit. Just as he made his first steps I let her fly and dropped him; but as is typical with the .223 he jumped up, spun around 4 or 5 spins then ran 5 yards and collapsed.

I was 40 yards from the e-caller, up on the hill near a sage bush so I really don't know how he first spotted me....just goes to show....the slightest movement and they catch it....His canines were beginning to flatten off from wear; this being an older dog, in great shape, with a beautiful thick coat. (might make "northern heavy" status)

Thanks guys! Oldboy, I am falling in love with that black rifle; she is a sweet shooter (accurate) with no noticeable barrel jump and oh so smooth shooting. I enjoy your posts immensely; so in my book you are "the man"...Thanks for all your postings in a beautiful country.
